Aaron Ammerman (F'00) previews the goings on in the Big 10, profiling the Wisconsin Badgers:
"Of the teams with a losing record at the end of the
last season, the Badgers
are the highest ranked for the pre-season. Only
UMich is ahead of them.
Everyone's predicting another lackluster season for
the Big Ten, which is
usually a good sign that the Big Ten will be
surprisingly good. Madison's
got Lee Evans returning for his senior year (and
Anthony Davis looking to
repeat his frosh success; nationally 3rd in
receiving and 5th in rushing
respectively. Evans will miss all the non-conf
games with a knee injury, but
will hopefully be back before the first Big Ten
matchup against JoePa and
whatever players he has this season. Barry is
reverting to his old status as
the John Thompson of college football, scheduling
five "exhibition" games
against mostly Div I opponents. The Badgers of
2002 will get a chance to
avenge last year's debacle against Fresno State
however. Hot prospect looks
to be freshman RB Phillip Fuller out of Irving
(Nimitz) Texas. Eyes will be
on him to be Davis's understudy, with every shot
for a national rushing title
himself someday. The only big question mark is
behind the center- QBing the
sorest spot for last year's team. Bollinger's back
at the helm, but Barry
showed last year a willingness to bench him in
favor of the
sometime-sensation Sorgi. A real race could repeat
this year.
Also, the polls are doing the Buckeyes a real
service. OSU has got to be
burning after being snubbed. If the rage lasts,
you will see them gunning
for the Fiesta Bowl. They've got a great team (I
hate to admit) but no one
has noticed .. yet."
Simon Torres (F'00) gives us a snapshot glimpse of who he thinks will make the Dallas Cowboys' roster this season:I did a mock 53-man roster. Here's what it looks
like:
"QB: Carter, Hutchinson, Steorner (3)
RB: Emmitt, Hambrick, Tony Taylor (3)
FB: Thomas, Zimmerman (2)
WR: Galloway, Rocket, Bryant, Swinton, Rambo,
Copeland (6)
TE: McGee, Robinson, Whalen, Lucky (4)
OL: Allen, Gurode, Page, Adams, Garmon, Lehr,
Gibson, Dorsey (8)
DE: Ellis, Zellner, Ekuban and Evans (4)
DL: Noble, Glover, Myers, Nix, Blade, Stewart (6)
LB; Hardy, Dat, Coakley, Grant, Steele, and Jamal
Brooks (6)
CB: Edwards, Westbrook, Dennis, Ross, Hunter (5)
S: Williams, Woodson, Dixon, Scott/Evans (4)
K: Seder (1)
P: Knorr (1)
This is based on the fact that Campo and Coslet
have gone on the record as
saying that they are going to try and find a spot
for James Whalen, even if
it means keeping 4 (yes, 4) tight ends. McGee and
Robinson are givens.
Lucky is needed for his blocking. Which leaves
Whalen, who catches
everything thrown at him. Hell, the guy set the
NCAA record for most
catches by a tight end in a season a few years back
with 90. He's had a
great camp. This is also based on the Cowboys
keeping six receivers.
Joey, Rocket and Antonio Bryant are the top three
guys. Swinton is bitching
about not getting a chance for compete for the
third receiver spot, but
Bryant is bigger and runs better routes. No
contest. Reggie will stay on
the team as the fourth WR for his return skills.
Which leaves Rambo and
Copeland. From what I hear, they have both had
excellent camps. I see
Dallas keeping them both. This means Randal
Williams, Deveren Johnson,
Flowers and Yamini are all out. A few might make
the practice squad,
but....
Obviously, the real cuts will take place on
defense. At CB, Duane
Hawthorne started games last year, but I think he
will not make the cut,
which is a shame. Ross and Hunter are much bigger
and cheaper. Duane
could sneak on if the 'Boys cut Bryant Westbrook,
and don't think that this
isn't a possibility. He hasn't had a great camp.
Dwayne Goodrich, he of
'00 top pick status, will probably be cut. CB is
where the bloodletting
happens. At DE, the Cowboys will more than likely
be set on the 4 guys
above, which means Byron Frisch gets the boot.
That's a shame, as he's
played well, but Ekuban might not even start and
Evans has turned it on.
The DL will be the deepest part of the team. The
six above are locks, and
Stewart can also line up at end. No surprises at
LB and S, although I
suspect Keith Evans or Rashidi Barnes could make
the team instead of Scott,
or less likely, Dixon.
My projections for the OL might as well be written
in quicksand, given the
injuries. I think the Cowboys are hard-pressed,
though, to keep Aaron
Gibson, although Al Jackson is a player. Keeping
four TEs and six WRs
really, really hurts the OL. Mike Lucky better
learn how to play
tackle....
I envision Deveren Johnson, Byron Frisch, Al
Jackson, Tyson Walter and one
of the safeties being kept on the practice squad.
This is the first year
that I can remember that we will have to turn guys
away that we would like
to keep. Alas, no Richmond Flowers or Randal
Williams."
